Parking in Dubrovnik
Visitor car parks, seasonal prices and the access rules around the Old Town.

Where can a visitor park a rental car?
Parking in Dubrovnik depends on both the space and the route used to reach it. Sanitat manages public parking zones with different visitor and resident rules. Around the Old Town, the special traffic regime adds a vehicle-access requirement before a driver reaches the parking space.
With collection arranged in the city, the handover place and overnight parking remain separate arrangements. Delivery does not reserve a parking space or grant traffic-zone access.
The two reservation-only visitor car parks in zone 0 are Iza Grada, also named Pile car park, and Žičara lower plateau below the cable car. Žičara upper plateau belongs to zone 2 and is resident-only. Gradac is a separate restricted parking area for qualifying preferential parking ticket holders.
For visitors without a reservation inside the traffic zone, the Dubrovnik Tourist Board names Gruž, Ilijina Glavica and the public garage as parking options, followed by a city bus journey to the Old Town. Ilijina Glavica also names an area within the traffic zone. Access requirements depend on the route to the garage.
What are Sanitat’s parking zones?
| Zone | Location and use | Charging or eligibility |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Iza Grada / Pile and Žičara lower plateau | Visitor reservations; charged 24 hours a day |
| 1 | Business-zone streets around Gruž and the port | Charged daily, 06:00 to 22:00 |
| 2 | Streets around the Old Town and Žičara upper plateau | Eligible residents with a valid permit only |
| 3 | Wider city streets, including Lapad and Gruž | Charged daily, 06:00 to 22:00 |
| 4 | Gradac | Qualifying PPK holders only |
| 5 | Liechtensteinov put, Gospino polje | Separate zone conditions |
The zone and signs at the space determine its use. A ticket for a visitor zone does not turn a resident-only space into public visitor parking. Sanitat’s zones and prices cover the individual locations.
What does parking near the Old Town cost?
The following zone 0 tariffs were checked on 18 September 2026, from Sanitat’s price list effective from 2 June 2025. They apply to Iza Grada / Pile and Žičara lower plateau, not to every car park in Dubrovnik.
| Zone 0 ticket | May to October | November to April |
|---|---|---|
| One hour | €20 | €5 |
| Multi-hour / daily ticket | €250 | €51 |
Sanitat reserves the right to add a 10% reservation handling fee. A lost ticket at the Pile off-street car park is charged at the zone’s multi-hour-ticket price. The current reservation price can differ if the tariff changes after the date shown here.
Zone 1 and zone 3 have their own tariffs. The zone 0 figures above do not describe a Lapad hotel, Gruž parking space or private garage. Hotel parking also remains a separate arrangement from the car rental.
How does the Old Town traffic regime affect a rental car?
The City’s special traffic regime normally applies from 1 March to 30 November. It covers Grad, Pile-Kono and Ploče iza Grada, including streets such as Zagrebačka, Iza Grada and Frana Supila. Cameras monitor vehicle access. Rental cars are not exempt.
Visitor access can be based on a prepaid reservation at Pile or Žičara lower plateau, private accommodation parking with the vehicle registered in advance by the host, or a hotel stay inside the zone under the applicable access arrangement. For prepaid parking, entry is allowed at most 20 minutes before the reservation, with departure required within 20 minutes after it ends.
From 1 December to the end of February the normal seasonal restriction is lifted, but the Mayor can activate the system outside the usual period for events or traffic peaks. Camper vans and caravans are prohibited during the active period.
The general City decision sets a €260 fine for a natural person for unauthorised entry; the 2025 amendment allows a written warning in some cases. This is not a quoted fine for a rental-company vehicle. Those vehicles fall under separate rules, and the rental company can pass on charges under its terms. No rental-company fine amount is asserted here.
The City’s traffic-zone page provides the decision, English instructions and parking reservation link. These access details and the general fine were checked on 16 September 2026.
How is public parking paid for?
Sanitat lists parking meters, SMS, BMove, Dubrovnik Parking and Tisak kiosks for hourly street parking. Its payment page also advertises Aircash. Parking meters do not return excess money.
SMS payment uses the vehicle registration without spaces or special characters: 708201 for zone 1 and 708203 for zone 3. Sanitat treats payment as unsuccessful if no confirmation arrives within two minutes. Parking meters, apps and kiosks provide other payment methods.
The Sanitat FAQ and payment instructions describe these methods. The ticket, zone and vehicle registration identify the parking being paid for.
Who pays parking charges and fines during the hire?
Fuel, parking, fines and toll roads are the renter’s responsibility under the rental terms on parking charges. Some companies hold the deposit for 30 to 45 days after return. A fine or unpaid toll incurred during the rental may be charged to that deposit, including administration expenses for fines.
The deposit and payment checks explain the distinction between rental payment and the security held by the company. Returning a car does not turn a parking space into a supplier return point; the handover address remains the one arranged for the booking.
A visitor renting only for the days beyond the city has fewer rental nights to accommodate in a parking plan. The search for a rental car in Dubrovnik supports those dates, with collection availability determined by the selected offer.
Parking questions
Can visitors park in Sanitat zone 2?
Zone 2 is for eligible residents with a valid permit. An empty space does not make it visitor parking. Gradac, zone 4, is also restricted to qualifying PPK holders.
Does a Pile parking reservation include access time?
The prepaid reservation permits entry up to 20 minutes before the slot. Departure from the zone is required within 20 minutes after it ends.
Has an SMS parking payment worked if no reply arrives?
Sanitat says payment has failed if the confirmation message does not arrive within two minutes. A sent message alone is not confirmation of a ticket.
Is the general €260 fine the amount charged for a rental-car offence?
The general decision gives a €260 fine for a natural person. Rental-company vehicles are covered by separate rules, so that figure is not a quoted rental-car charge.
